ETI! ONDOA MASHAKA BADO SIS TUNAWAKA

On April 5th 2008, over 200 people joined Swahili students at New College in their second annual course festival. With drumming classes, East African eats, local vendors, and Kiswahili lessons, Eti! was successful in fostering the original organizers vision: expanding financial support, curriculum content, and respect for African Studies at the University of Toronto. Like Mwalimu’s classes, this event worked with the basic understanding that without the contribution of communities around the GTA our knowledge of the Kiswahili language, and of many East African cultures, would be at a great loss. Thank you to all who participated, organized, and made it happen! Kaa Salama!

MAPAMBAZUKO

MAPAMBAZUKO is a Swahili term that means awakening, daybreak or enlighten. MAPAMBAZUKO was a one day event celebrating the diversity of the African culture, languages, music, and history from Africa and other African Diaspora destinations. The event was held in April of this year 2007. It brought under one umbrella performers and vendor booth displays that represented African work in various ways. Although, the event theme is about Africa, it sought to draw together people from different cultures to share in the celebration. The event showcased local vendors who are either artists, community groups, or entrepreneurs who sold authentic African arts, crafts, handmade jewelry, sculpture and clothing. The event also featured live performances from local African groups and, of course, a taste of African cultural food that will be catered by New Bilan, an East African restaurant.
