CURRENT KISWAHILI COURSES

Kiswahili or Swahili language, is one of the courses offered in the African Studies Program at the University of Toronto. New College has been the home of Kiswahili since the course was started more than 25 years ago. Both Introductory and Intermediate level Swahili courses are offered in alternate years. However, this academic year 2007-2008 the two level courses will be offered concurrently. As well, students who meet certain requirements are allowed to pursue independent study in the subject. A brief description of each follows below:

NEW280Y1Y (INTRODUCTORY SWAHILI)

The course aims at introducing Kiswahili to beginners. No previous knowledge in Swahili is required. Native speakers of the language cannot be enrolled at this level of the course. Major components of the course include basic grammar, reading, writing, speaking and some cultural aspects of the Swahili speaking people of East and Central Africa. Upon completion of the course students are expected to master basic reading, writing and speaking skills enabling them to converse in Swahili with little difficulty and to have an appreciation of Swahili culture.

In addition, students are exposed to Swahili prose, drama, poetry, translation and other aspects of Swahili grammar not covered in Introductory Swahili. Upon completion of the course, students are expected to have not only acquired greater competency in the Swahili language in writing, reading and writing, but also to have an appreciation of Swahili drama, poetry, prose, and to be able to read Swahili newspapers and listen to Swahili music and watch movies available on the Internet and elsewhere. Students who have completed this level of the course are also expected to write Swahili articles in newspapers and participate in Swahili drama performances.
